  It doesn't allow A/B switching in real time, on live video sources,
and it cannot preview effects & clip transitions in real time.  The
Flyer does.

  For some people's needs, live, realtime ability beats rendered
results, even if the quality drops.  Better, of course, if you don't
have to sacrifice quality.

  If your target is Quicktime, yes, absolutely, the Flyer wasn't
designed or geared to that market.  But if your target is video
production, and especially fast turnaround, flexible production, the
Flyer is very, very effective.

  Well, you can, if you use the entire thing as a Lightwave image
sequence, and output not as a Flyer clip, but as an image file.  But you
don't need to Flyer to do that; any good capture board should work (PVR
is a nice choice for the money).

  In typical video production, more than 3 layers is uncommon; most
doesn't go past two layers.  Some commercials do use lots of layers, and
it looks nice, but it isn't likely to be the bulk of your work in video
production.

 And to avoid any more tendency to flame wars, I do think people should
qualify their statements about the utility of NLE (etc.) devices.
Price-performance is an issue, as is intended market/use.  There is
almost always something more expensive which will be better, in some
ways, that what you are using -- but if you cannot afford it, who cares?
